The lake

The lake lies on the grounds of Tiger Cub's country house, a two-story brick building surrounded by a tall fence and a magical mirage that conceals the property from ordinary view. The water is described as glinting like a bright mirror in the sun, and the surrounding area is thickly planted with trees, including giant pines and firs that were preserved during construction. The lake is shallow, as Yulia notes when she calls her mother to report on the vacation. It is a place of natural beauty and seclusion, deliberately chosen by Gesar to remove the entire Night Watch from Moscow during a critical phase of his plan.

The Retreat and Its Purpose

The lake is the centerpiece of a forced vacation ordered by Gesar during an unprecedented June heat wave in Moscow. The boss tells the Watch to clear out of the city, to go anywhere—the Maldives, Greece, or a summerhouse outside town—and not to return until Monday lunchtime. Tiger Cub's property, with its lake, becomes the gathering point for about twenty Light Ones, including Anton, Svetlana, Semyon, Ilya, Ignat, Yulia, Olga, and others. The stated purpose is rest and relaxation after a week of intense work, but the true purpose, as Anton later realizes, is to remove the Watch from Moscow so that Gesar can execute his plan to have Svetlana use the Chalk of Destiny to rewrite the destiny of the boy Egor, thereby creating a new instrument for the Light's long-term social engineering.

Activities and Atmosphere

The lake provides the setting for swimming, sunbathing, and barbecuing. Semyon takes charge of the barbecue, handing out kebabs that seem to cook with suspicious speed, hinting at magical assistance. There are two crates of dry wine standing in the shade. The atmosphere is initially one of forced merriment, with magicians engaging in duels of climate magic, card games with magical cheating, and flirtations. Ignat, the Watch's resident ladies' man, is surrounded by women from the research department. Semyon and Ilya compete by changing the climate in the living room, producing winter in the forest outside Moscow, autumn mist, and summer in Spain. The lake itself is used for swimming, and Ignat, Lena, and Olga spend time there together.

The Lake as a Site of Conflict

Despite the idyllic setting, the lake becomes the stage for the unraveling of Anton and Svetlana's relationship and the revelation of the Watch's deeper machinations. Svetlana, feeling the pressure of her accelerated training and the knowledge that she is being groomed as a Great Sorceress, confronts Anton about the lack of genuine joy in their lives. She argues that the Watch's work, while necessary, has become a series of battles without real happiness, and that people have forgotten genuine magic. Anton, in turn, accuses her of complaining without understanding the stakes. Their argument culminates in Svetlana crying on Anton's shoulder, and later, in a moment of emotional vulnerability, she sleeps with Ignat in the study, a betrayal that Anton discovers the next morning. The lake thus witnesses the breakdown of their bond, as Anton realizes that the wall between them—the difference in their potential power and destiny—is becoming insurmountable.

The Lake as a Symbol of Isolation and Truth

The lake and its surrounding forest also serve as a space for private revelation and self-confrontation. After discovering Svetlana with Ignat, Anton walks alone into the forest, where he vents his frustration and disillusionment with the Watch's mission, questioning the value of protecting humanity when people seem incapable of change. He encounters Tiger Cub in her tigress form, violently clawing at tree trunks in a private ritual of release, a reminder that even the most powerful Light Ones struggle with their own darkness. The lake, with its calm surface and reflective quality, becomes a mirror for the characters' inner turmoil, a place where the pretense of unity and purpose gives way to individual pain and doubt. It is here that Anton resolves to oppose Gesar's plan, setting in motion the final confrontation on the roof of the house on stilts.
